With England’s first World Cup appearance scheduled for 9pm tomorrow night, and pubs granted permission to keep the screens on and the pints flowing till late, it’s about time you started planning your outfit. And if you’re going for a sporty and stylish look, but not sure where to start, then this limited-edition six-piece collection could be your answer. Reformation, the sustainable LA womenswear brand, has teamed up with British sportswear label Umbro to create a chic edit of sporty shorts, “Umbro x Reformation” football jerseys and funnel neck jackets that you’ll wear long after the footy is over.
“The collection started with classic football codes like track jackets, jerseys, polos and little shorts, drawing on ’90s football culture, old Umbro silhouettes and British sportswear,” says Lauren Caris Cohan, chief creative officer of Reformation, describing the designs as “nostalgic and sporty but still pretty, and rooted in that feeling of getting dressed to watch a match at a bar with friends”.
Modelled by influencer and brand friend Devon Lee Carlson, the collection is entirely made from deadstock athletic materials and, thanks to a palette of burnt ochre, purple and red, feels more luxe than your average ensemble from JD.
For Cohan, who took the helm at Reformation in 2022, Umbro was an obvious choice thanks to “its iconic place in football culture and nostalgic pull”. And certainly the ’90s-esque piped-edge spaghetti strap mini dresses emblazoned with the Umbro logo feel like something the Spice Girls might have worn in Baden-Baden.
Other aspects of the collection are decidedly elevated – the white funnel neck track jacket will look cute with the side stripe navy shorts on match day, but pair it with wide leg satin trousers and you’ve got a very elegant summer lunch look.
Ref x Umbro launches June 22, online and in select Ref stores.
