There’s a particular day each year that hits mid-spring, when you step outside in your jumper and winter coat and realise – while breaking a light sweat on your walk to the tube – that it is officially Suede Jacket Season.
This blink-and-you-miss-it weather window presents that sartorial sweet spot in which, unshackled from the burden of fending off icy chills, you can start to really enjoy your wardrobe. It’s a time when pro dressers can flex their layering know-how; think shirts over tank tops, silk scarves worn with lightweight jumpers, and outerwear that you can throw on when the wind whips up.
When it comes to the latter, there are options: a trench coat will always be classic, and sporty windbreakers are having a major 2026 moment thanks to Miu Miu and Saint Laurent; while the denim jacket returns every spring. But, if you’re looking for something that goes with almost everything in your wardrobe and feels polished but effortless, look no further than a suede jacket.
The spring/summer runways were awash with love letters to the staple – from Altuzarra’s exaggerated funnel neck suede swing jacket to Miu Miu’s brilliant, boxy leather-trim blazer – and the high street has upped its game in terms of both suede quality and design. This year’s season centres on four main silhouettes.
The suede bomber
If your winter coat came power-shouldered and floor-skimming and you know your Salomons from your Sambas, it’s probably time you considered a suede bomber, the most casual-but-cool way to approach the trend. Many of the season’s best suede bombers come with the funnel neck silhouette that dominated through winter. Alongside Altuzarra, Dutch brand Rohe has a sporty version in tan goat leather, while Reformation and Citizens of Humanity both do funnel neck jackets in a spring-ready pale pecan that would be perfect thrown over a white tee and pale denim.
The suede blazer
Chocolate brown suede blazers have become a staple in the wardrobes of the style set in the last year, and for spring 2026 we are seeing suede tailoring in paler tones of beige and olive. Leather label Arma’s Benny jacket comes with a drop-shouldered oversized fit that looks great paired with straight leg denim and chunky earrings, while the collarless neckline of Arket’s beige suede blazer gives the silhouette a fresh feel.
The western moment
Here comes the tricky one. It would be remiss to discuss suede jackets without mention of a Western-inspired silhouette. However, go too hard on the theme and a tasselled suede jacket can veer towards cowgirl costume. To swerve anything remotely resembling Coachella 2012, avoid embellishments at all costs. If we are doing tassels we are doing a minimal silhouette in one colour with absolutely zero adornments. If in doubt, opt for black (try Rixo’s Teagan jacket)) which instantly feels more Portobello Road than Rodeo girl.
The chore jacket
Perhaps the freshest addition to the suede chat this season is the chore jacket silhouette. Collared, buttoned, boxy and slightly cropped, the style caters to the minimalists and utilitarian dressers, but also works, when shopped in slimmer fits, with more feminine wardrobes. Rise & Fall has a great suede chore jacket – available in chocolate or navy – that’s clean, unfussy and ideal for layering. Mango and Zara also have lovely ones for a tighter budget. And if you’re looking for something similarly practical but even more relaxed, consider a suede overshirt. Sezane’s Will shirt in olive suede is one of those items you’ll be asked about on your dressed-just-right walk to the tube.
