Since 1987, France’s gastronomic capital Lyon has hosted the Bocuse d’Or: the culinary equivalent of the Olympics. Every two years two chefs – a head and a commis chef – from more than 20 countries battle it out in front of an audience, preparing two intricate dishes to present to judges. And this year, for the first time in the competition’s history, the UK delegation will include a female chef: Stella Harris. She’ll act as commis (assistant) chef to head chef Oliver McGeorge.
Harris is chef de partie at Gordon Ramsay’s Savoy Grill – the kitchen where she began her first role three years ago. Ahead of the Bocuse d’Or, which kicks off on March 15, the chef shares her top spots to eat, drink and date in London.
Apart from the Savoy Grill, where do you head for a special occasion?
My go-to spot for a glamorous meal is Caractère in Notting Hill. It is so elegant but still relaxed, and the French Italian food is stunning. It is the type of place where each dish is fully immersive and feels very special.
What’s your go-to for a quick lunch?
I’ll usually grab sushi from Atariya in north London [several locations] – it is fresh, simple and consistently tasty.
Where does the best coffee?
I’m quite loyal to Monmouth Coffee Company. It’s just really good coffee without any fuss.
Any date-night reccs?
My go-to date night spot is Brat in Shoreditch. It has a great buzzy atmosphere, and the food from the grill is so good.
Where do you take out-of-towners?
Honestly, I would take them straight to the Savoy Grill. It is where I work, and where I started my career, so it is always nice being able to show people a place I find so personal. It is just such an iconic London restaurant, it feels like a proper experience for anyone visiting.
Which London restaurant offers the best overall experience?
Flat Iron in Covent Garden. It is simple but done really well. The steak is nice, the restaurant has a good atmosphere and everything runs so efficiently. Plus, you get a free ice-cream at the end, which somehow always tastes better after a steak!
Sometimes all you want is a drink and a snack. Where are you going?
I usually end up at Barrafina. A couple of my best friends and I love going there for a proper catch up. Sitting at the counter with a drink and a few tapas is the perfect way to spend an evening.
What under-the-radar spot should get more attention?
74 Charlotte Street by Ben Murphy. It is mega underrated – it is a new opening and it hasn’t had the recognition it deserves. It serves high quality, brilliant food and great cocktails.
