Five years ago, friends and creatives Malika Favre and George Wu created @icantaffordthisbutmaybeshecan – “the longest Instagram handle out there”, Favre jokes – as a light-hearted “long-distance shopping list” between the pair of wannabe millionaires.
Their selection of bold, bright and playful designs – from Bauhaus-inspired homewares to hand-poked flower tattoos – has since gained a cult following. After launching a newsletter late last year, the next evolution is a more affordable edit in the form of an online shop (or bazaar as they are calling it), which has just gone live.
It features more than 300 curated pieces from over 90 brands with items ranging from “homeware to fashion, games to art and tech to pets”. Like the Instagram account, it’s a curation of the eye-catching and esoteric. London-based animator and shoe designer Jocie Juritz’s monochrome cat-splashed shoes sit alongside a bold geometrically patterned rug from Norway’s Volver Studios and a floppy disk-shaped wallet by New York designer Nik Bentel. There’s also a typewriter, art books, plates, block-coloured dresses and even ceramic bongs. Perfectly timed for the festive season.
