When Broadsheet London announced the line-up for its inaugural Dine Out festival (August 4 to 10), we weren’t surprised that the first event to sell out was a collaboration between Lee Tiernan and Angela Hartnett, held at Hartnett’s Bermondsey restaurant Cafe Murano. Both chefs (and longtime friends) are big names in their own right – but it’s also been nearly a year since Tiernan’s restaurant, FKABAM (Formerly Known as Black Axe Mangal) closed. In late 2025, founders Lee and Kate Tiernan announced they would “hit the pause button” on the diner.
We may not yet know what’s next for the Tiernans’ concept, which is inspired by Lee’s travels through Istanbul’s mangal culture as well as his decade cooking at St John. But, for one night only, Tiernan will bring Black Axe Mangal to Cafe Murano to create a three-course sharing feast which will blend Hartnett’s Italian classics with a Black Axe Mangal twist.
To mark this return, we asked Tiernan about his favourite spots to eat in London – which range from neighbourhood gems in Leytonstone to the grande dame of Soho.
Is there anything happening in London’s food scene that’s getting you excited at the moment?
The ever-growing sense of community within our industry is encouraging. I think there is more interest in supporting and eating at independent restaurants too, which makes me happy.
What are you most looking forward to about your collaboration with Angela Hartnett for Dine Out?
Angela is always so game and up for anything whenever we collaborate, and it’s always a laugh so I’m looking forward to the craic and cooking some fun interpretations of Murano classics.
What are some other chef collaborations in recent times that you’ve found particularly exciting?
Any event Mam Sham throws is top drawer. They pull out all the stops to make the night as entertaining as possible. Integrating comedy and good grub. You will not be disappointed.
What’s your go-to for a quick takeaway dinner?
Good Friend Chicken in Chinatown is a firm favourite of mine. Eating crispy, spicy Taiwanese fried chicken with a couple of beers on the kerb is a nice thing to do on a sunny day – good people watching, too.
You want to go all-out – where are you booking?
Bentley’s is a real treat: unbeatable quality seafood and brilliant, friendly service. The whole experience reflects Richard [Corrigan]’s charm and attention to detail.
Where do you go to eat if you also want to have fun?
Le Regret in Leytonstone has a great, energetic vibe. Super fun independent spot, excellent food and personal service. Get yourself down there.
If you have friends visiting from out of town, where are you taking them?
Quo Vadis. It’s classic, always a great meal and the room is fantastic.
Where would you go for a good drink and a snack?
El Siete on Brewer Street does cracking cocktails and drinks accompanied by a delicious selection of tostadas. [There are] £7 cocktails between 5pm and 7pm to boot. What’s not to like?
What’s your favourite spot for a perfect date night?
It’s not so easy to get out together at night sometimes; lunch can be a more suitable option for us. We can’t wait to return to The Yellow Bittern in King’s Cross. Intimate, cosy, perfect.
Your favourite breakfast spot?
Bar Brasso. Incredible breakfast bagels and all-day bagels.
Is there a hidden gem in London you think is special and more people should know about?
Homies on Donkeys. Another brilliant spot local to me. Very craveable Mexican food and especially good spicy Margaritas.
What’s your favourite sweet treat in London?
Gelupo in Soho. I find it very hard to walk past and not get a scoop. It’s even harder to just get one scoop. Get the sour cherry and ricotta if it’s on the menu.
What’s your bucket list restaurant (anywhere in the world)?
Prime Seafood Palace, Toronto.
