“I want people to walk in and want what I'm wearing,” says Hattie Glendenning, the woman quietly shaking up London’s tailoring scene with her suiting company, Hax.
Since opening in 2023, her Mayfair studio has become a go-to for the capital’s most stylish – Raven Smith, Sophie Turner and Cynthia Erivo have all been outfitted here. Glendenning specialises in bespoke and made-to-order suits, jackets and dresses that are modern, versatile and, in comparison to Savile Row, more accessibly priced (a two-piece suit starts at £1100).
When it comes to dressing for work, she always chooses at least one piece that she’s made herself. “I don’t always wear a suit, but usually a tailored pair of trousers dressed down with a baggy T-shirt and a different jacket,” she says. “I like to create pieces that work together. I tell my clients to wear their suits everyday – to the shops, cafes or to see friends for dinner. Suits are the most comfortable thing.”
Jacket
“I love a brown suit because it feels relaxed. This one is a Dugdale Cavalry Twill fabric with wide lapels. The shoulders are roped, which gives them structure, and the twill brings a certain drapiness.”
T-shirt
“I like pairing something as luxe as a bespoke suit with a simple white tee. I buy all my T-shirts from Uniqlo Kids, where they’re slightly boxier and cropped – helpful if your trousers are high-waisted.”
Trousers
“I usually go for a wide-leg with a pleat but these are a bootcut, which gives a nice swing to the trouser when I’m walking.”
Shoes
“My loafers are Bass Weejuns. I buy variations of the same style on repeat, they’re just so comfy.”
Scarf
“I love wearing ties and neck scarves. It makes me feel either boyish or elegant, depending on the styling. This one’s a vintage design from my late auntie.”
