Ceramics and furniture brand Feldspar has seduced interiors lovers with its minimalist, handmade designs since it launched in 2016. Now its founders, husband and wife duo Cath and Jeremy Brown, have partnered with Bath-born interior design studio Berdoulat on a new lighting range that puts a more playful – and much tastier – twist on their striking designs. Modelled on popular French baked goods – canelés, madeleines and brioche – the line is the brands’ second collaboration, following a canelé-inspired pendant light borne out of lockdown.
“When we first started working together it was so much fun that we couldn’t wait to do it again,” Cath tells Broadsheet. “We love everything [founders] Patrick and Neri [Williams] have ever created – from wallpaper to paint to their extraordinarily beautiful home and shop.”
Berdoulat is named after the French farm house where Patrick grew up. So when planning their first collaboration, the quartet thought it was only fitting it be themed around their shared love of French patisserie.
The new collection includes a canelé ceiling rose, and madeleine- and brioche-shaped wall sconces, all in Feldspar’s signature white fine bone china. It is one of only a few brands in the UK currently producing it.
“We wanted to build on what we’d already created, so expanding the lighting collection seemed a good place to start,” says Cath. “We also wanted to embrace the unique qualities of china, too – opaque white during daylight but translucent and glowing in the dark. Plus, we wanted to keep our raison d’être – patisserie!”
Given Londoners’ willingness to make pilgrimages for pastries and queue around the block for the latest-limited edition bakes, there’s no doubt the range will resonate. As Cath jokes: “Immortalising your favourite cake in fine bone china light form? What’s not to like?”
Feldspar and Berdoulat are both aligned on a dedication to using local materials and artisans when creating their modern heirlooms. “Even the brass backplates are milled just down the road from us here in Devon – we like to keep things local,” says Cath of the wall lights.
The launch comes right after Feldspar’s new tea set collaboration with London-based tastemaker Lucy Williams, and its September move into the furniture world.
Cath says the lights will look at home wherever you want to hang them. “We had originally envisaged the wall sconces as being kitchen or bathroom lights – but we’ve currently got a brioche up in our sitting room. They add a warm glow when lit, but look like beautiful sculptures when switched off.”
